Situation
Our client is an icon in the transportation industry and keenly aware of the impact carbon emissions have on the environment. Every day, millions of packages are moved, and parameters like weight, distance, and mode of transport that impact carbon emissions are captured. This data is scanned at different stages (pickup, transit, delivery) and stored in Azure, and carbon emission reports and CO2e predictions are generated at the time of the order. An innovative solution was needed to improve these reports.

The innovative app calculates emissions at a package level granularity, setting a new standard in scalability.
An older tech stack, poor user interface on a single web app, scalability, and data spread across the enterprise also presented challenges.
Action
We developed an app to track and report on our client’s carbon emissions data. Working in collaboration with their data science team, we built the functionality that allows its customers to estimate (via self-service) the carbon emissions on future shipments. A modern UI was also developed for a better user experience.
The cloud native application was deployed on Azure with Databricks and Postgres backend, Angular and ReactJS frontends. Emission data is available via Spring Boot based microservices (API). Multiple user interfaces were built using Angular or React.
Emission calculations are performed in PySpark, with an automated process that provides an outcome of CO2e emissions. Customers receive reports on carbon emissions and predictions at the time of order.
In addition to emissions calculations and insights, features of the app include reporting and predictive capabilities for shipment planning. Package and account level views display CO2e shipping emissions.
This innovative app set a new standard in achieving scalability by calculating emissions at a package level granularity, and helping our client achieve its goal of carbon neutrality by 2040.
Our solution is third-party certified and compliant with GLEC framework and GHG protocol.
